**California quail (Callipepla californica), inhabit the chaparral, sagebrush, oak woodlands, and foothill forests of California and the northwest, walking around and scratching for food in groups called coveys. When startled, California quail either take off running on their little legs or explode in short bursts of flight until they reach cover.
