I first saw Gouldian finches at a California Academy of Sciences exhibit titled Color of Life. I had never seen such an assortment of candy-colored birds — some with red heads, some orange, and others black. It turns out that head color in males isn't just decorative: red-headed males tend to be bolder and more dominant, while black-headed males are calmer and more stress-resilient. I wonder which the females prefer? I personally can't decide! This trio is at home perched in the swaying branches of a blossoming eucalyptus tree.
