This is a real insect! Picasso Bugs (Sphaerocoris annulatus) were wandering the planet hundreds of millions of years before their namesake was born. Their vivid colors warn would-be predators that they're not worth eating — though they are quite small and entirely harmless to humans. They are the kind of creature that makes me pause and remember that nature has always been the best artist.
