When I was a kid I read a Serendipity book called Kiyomi about a dancing deer and a fire lizard named Sumi, who both believed they were the most beautiful creatures in existence. I can't help but imagine Sumi as a San Francisco garter snake — perhaps admiring his reflection in some calm wetland pond. Shy, endangered, and found only along the California coast from San Mateo to Santa Cruz counties, this snake is a true California beauty.
