Like wisps of cloud over the mountains, snow leopards are an elusive but powerful presence in the alpine and subalpine zones of Central Asia. As both apex predator and indicator of ecological vitality, they are key to maintaining health and balance for countless other species. Protecting their habitat indirectly benefits the entire community around them — including the species pictured here: Sikkim Blushwort, the orchid Calanthe tricarinata, the Indian Roller, and the moth Lotaphora iridicolor.
