Tiger Moth Pair

Every few years, entomologists at the California Academy of Sciences select an order of insects to do a "pest check" — pulling out hundreds of drawers to scan each specimen for signs of damage. I was lucky enough to get assigned to the tiger moths. It seemed like each drawer I pulled contained more amazing specimens than the last: striking oranges, pinks, and yellows, and some that looked as though they had been painted by Joan Miró himself. Two of my favorites were Gorgonidia harteri from South America and Mangina argus from Southeast Asia — the species illustrated here.
