Turquoise-browed motmots go by a variety of different names. In El Salvador and Nicaragua, where it is the national bird, it is called Torogoz and guardabarranco (ravine guard), respectively. In the Yucatan it is called pajaro reloj (clock bird), due to its habit of wagging its long tail like a pendulum. But perhaps the most delightful name comes from Costa Rica, where it is sometimes known as pajaro bobo, or "foolish bird", because it has a tendency to let humans come very close without flying away.
