My coworkers and I at the California Academy of Sciences lovingly refer to weevils in the genus Pachyrhynchus as "Easter egg weevils" — they come in a dizzying variety of colors and patterns that look genuinely hand-painted. When I first saw the iridescent purple of Pachyrhynchus gemmatus, I knew I had to illustrate it. What makes this genus even more extraordinary is its distribution: at least 145 species are found across the oceanic islands of Southeast Asia — many of them in the Philippines and nowhere else on Earth.
